  • A Tribute to Janet Green Hunter

March 05, 2025
"I recently heard someone say that ‘the opportunity of a lifetime must be taken within the lifetime of the opportunity’ and that spoke to me. There are so many positive things happening at Midway and we need to invest in the institution and rally others to do the same to keep building on our current momentum.”
This quote is from Jan Hunter in 2017 and it sparked the Campaign of Opportunities.

A Statement from John P. Marsden, Ph.D., President, Midway University

“Midway University is blessed to have had a member of the Board of Trustees like Jan Hunter. Not only has she provided financial support to Midway, she has also been a leader on the Board of Trustees.  Her steady guidance, common sense approach, and passion during Board meetings were invaluable. At times, her strong voice kept our Board focused on our mission and service to our students.

"Early in my tenure at Midway University when the institution was struggling, Jan made a gift she called the “Marsden Initiative.” That gift not only helped us balance our budget that year, it allowed us to move forward. Jan's gesture made me realize how much she believed in me personally and the new direction of the University.

"After three years of challenges, we were able to turn the corner and have been on a positive trajectory. Jan’s continued support has allowed us to fund several new construction and renovation projects, allowing us to retain our students and expand the University.

"Without Jan, Midway University might not exist and certainly would not be in such a positive position today. The University can never thank her enough for being such a wonderful trustee.

"I am proud to have called her my friend.“

A Statement from Donna Moore Campbell ’62, Chair, Midway University Board of Trustees

"Since Jan joined the Midway Board of Trustees in 2000, she has been an inspiration to us all.  Not only did she travel from her home on the west coast for each board meeting over her 25 years of service, she continuously demonstrated her support for the institution by attending major campus events over the years, recruiting new students and sharing the Midway story as she traveled the world.

"Whether in Executive Committee meetings or in board sessions, Jan offered wise guidance and often led the discussion toward innovative programs and services—all to improve the college experience for Midway students.

"Her generous financial contributions allowed Midway University to not only survive major challenges of the past but to attain the sound financial footing from which we now benefit.   Jan truly gave her time, her talent and her treasure to Midway University.   I’m confident I speak for other trustees when I say how fortunate we were to have her as a colleague.

"How blessed I was to have counted Jan as a friend."
