  • Midway University Celebrates the Class of 2024 at Commencement Ceremony

Midway University celebrated the achievements of its graduating class of 2024 at a Commencement Ceremony held on Saturday, May 11 at the Graves Amphitheater. The event, which took place outdoors, was a joyous occasion filled with pride, reflection, and hope for the future.

The ceremony commenced at 11:00 a.m. with the official processional led by Dr. Gina DeArth-Pendley, Associate Professor of Psychology at Midway University. The distinguished platform party, including Ms. Donna Campbell '62, Chair of the Midway University Board of Trustees, Trustee Sheila Griffeth ’95 ’18, President John P. Marsden, and other esteemed guests, set the tone for the event.

President Marsden opened the ceremony with warm words of welcome and gratitude to all attendees. The National Anthem, led by Mr. Randall DeMerchant was performed by the Midway Chorale with grace and spirit.

Rev. Elizabeth Kluender, Campus Minister, delivered an uplifting invocation, acknowledging the hard work, perseverance, and accomplishments of the graduating class. This year, 409 students earned their degrees, with 247 graduate and undergraduate students walking during the commencement ceremony.

The ceremony then moved into a series of special recognitions, including the presentation of the prestigious President's Award to Daniel Cogo and the Midway Woman Award to Jordan Schauer.

Ms. Jalyn Jackson, President of the Midway University Student Government Association, delivered a heartfelt farewell address to her fellow graduates, urging them to cherish the memories of their time at Midway and embrace the opportunities that lay ahead.

Following inspiring speeches and special recognitions, the ceremony proceeded with the conferring of degrees upon the graduating class. Master's degree candidates were honored first, followed by bachelor's and associate degree candidates. Each graduate was greeted personally by Board Chair Campbell and President Marsden, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

President Marsden concluded the ceremony by expressing gratitude to the families, friends, faculty, and staff who supported the graduates throughout their academic journey. He invited the graduates to switch their tassels, symbolizing their transition from students to alumni of Midway University. 

As the ceremony came to a close, Brittany Crume Wright ‘13, President of the Alumni Association Board, welcomed the Class of 2024 into the esteemed ranks of Midway University alumni. She emphasized the importance of staying connected and involved with the university community, encouraging graduates to make a positive impact in their respective fields.

The event concluded with the singing of the Midway University Alma Mater, symbolizing the enduring bond between the graduates and their alma mater. With hearts full of pride and anticipation, the Class of 2024 embarked on a new chapter of their lives, equipped with knowledge, skills, and memories that will last a lifetime.

The prelude and recessional were performed by Keith Murphy, Bagpipes and the Bourbon & Brass Company, adding a touch of grandeur and tradition to the occasion.
