  • Honorees Announced for 2023 Spotlight Awards

February 01, 2023

Honorees for Midway University’s Spotlight Awards, an annual fundraiser for student scholarships, have been announced and include a two-time Purple Heart recipient from World War II, and a long-time trustee with years of dedicated volunteerism. Legendary Keeneland Trustee Emeritus James E. “Ted” Bassett III will receive the Pinkerton Vision Award and long-serving Midway University Board of Trustee member, Linda Green, will receive the Legacy Award.

Bassett, who served in Okinawa, has been synonymous with Keeneland for more than 50 years. After serving as Kentucky's Director of State Police, he began working for the Keeneland Association in 1968 and was Keeneland President from 1970-1986 before becoming Chairman of the Board. In 2003, he was named a Keeneland Trustee and now is a Trustee Emeritus. He celebrated his 101st birthday in 2022.

“It is a pleasure for us to recognize Mr. Bassett with the Pinkerton Vision Award for all of his contributions to Kentucky,” said Dr. John P. Marsden, President, Midway University. “His career is an inspiration to many and he truly is a Kentucky treasure.”

Green has been a Midway University Trustee since 1997. During her tenure she has served as Vice-President of the Board and Co-Chair of the Nominating Committee. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board. She is co-owner/operator of Bel-Mar Farm in Lexington. She also has been an active member of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation, the Lexington Woman's Club, and many other organizations.

“Giving of one’s time, talent and monetary support are integral to institutions like Midway University,” said Marsden. “Linda Green has left a true legacy at Midway. She has provided continuity on our board during many transitional periods, has been actively involved, and has provided business-minded guidance and support to help our campus grow and thrive. We look forward to celebrating her commitment to the University during our awards.”

The Spotlight Awards will be held on campus inside the McManis Student Center’s Marshall Gymnasium on Thursday, May 25. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the awards presentation. The evening is the largest annual fundraising event for Midway University and includes a live auction of unique experiences as well as a silent auction.
