  • Experiential Learning in Action: MCO 400 Students Design Summer Merchandise for Midway University

April 06, 2026

Experiential learning continues to thrive at Midway University as students in MCO 400 – Product Merchandising and Sales step beyond the classroom and into the world of product development.

Recently, Team Leaders in MCO 400 visited Big Bang Customs in Lexington to gain firsthand insight into apparel and accessory product development, screen printing, and embroidery. The visit marks the third iteration of a growing hands-on partnership that gives students real-world experience in merchandising, branding, and production strategy.

From Concept to Creation

This year’s project challenges students to design original summer clothing and accessories for the Midway University Eagle Outlet. Rather than simply studying product strategy from a textbook, students are immersed in the full creative process — from brainstorming and consumer and trend analysis to understanding fabrics, decoration techniques, pricing structures, and production logistics.

By observing screen printing and embroidery in action, students gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and coordination required to bring a concept to life.

Learning That Comes to Life

Taught by Associate Professor of Marketing, Dr. Amber Chatelain, the experience represents exactly what higher education should deliver.

“I love seeing experiential learning come to life through actual product development where my class can say, ‘Hey — I made that!’ When students move from concept idea to tangible products at the end of the semester, I can see how their confidence, creativity, and merchandising skills grow in a way that a lecture alone can’t provide.”

Dr. Chatelain emphasizes that the partnership is intentionally designed to mirror real industry expectations of trend scanning, product and vendor exploration, product design development, consumer market research and data analysis, and collective curation.

“This isn’t a simulation — it’s real merchandise, real timelines, and real accountability. Students are designing products that will represent our university brand and will be available for sale at our Midway University Eagle Outlet. That level of responsibility prepares them for careers in marketing, retail, entrepreneurship, and beyond.”

Designing with Strategy

With a focus on summer apparel and accessories, students must consider seasonality, campus culture, audience trends, and brand identity. The project requires strategic thinking — not just creativity. What will students want to wear to summer classes or athletic events? What products balance school spirit with everyday style?

By answering those questions, students gain practical skills in consumer analysis, product positioning, and brand alignment.

Preparing Career-Ready Leaders

Through this ongoing partnership, MCO 400 students build portfolios, strengthen professional communication skills, and develop a comprehensive understanding of the apparel production process — from idea to retail shelf.

As the finished products prepare to launch in the Eagle Outlet, one thing is certain: these students won’t just see merchandise on display — they’ll see the results of their own leadership and innovation.

Stay tuned for the reveal of this year’s summer collection.
