Innovation and inspiration took center stage at Midway University on October 6, as students in the Entrepreneurship (BUS-427) course and members of the newly launched Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club) welcomed Mr. Trevor Schirmer, co-founder of Apollo Automation, to campus.
Apollo Automation is a Kentucky-based tech startup developing advanced hardware and software for the smart home market. Since launching in September 2023, the company has focused on privacy-first, open-source solutions that empower users to take control of their smart homes. With a strong commitment to community-driven design, Apollo customizes its hardware and software based on real user feedback.
In the past year, Apollo Automation and its co-founders, Trevor Schirmer and Justin Bunton, made a major move by relocating their manufacturing operations to Woodford County. Their vision extends beyond smart home technology—they’re also focused on creating high-tech jobs and building a thriving tech hub in Versailles, Kentucky.
“He had a great story to tell with invaluable information,” said Amy Sheikh, Business Instructor and co-advisor of Midway’s Entrepreneurship Club. “This was a perfect start to what we hope will be a long line of guest speakers for our students. Nothing can replace real-world experiences, and we’re excited to connect Midway students with members of our community. These opportunities deepen understanding, create connections, and inspire students to follow their dreams of one day opening their own business or developing their own product.”

During the launch event, students also learned more about the E-Club’s upcoming plans, including workshops, pitch competitions, and guest speakers from Kentucky’s entrepreneurial community. Faculty members encouraged students to explore the Entrepreneurship Minor, which complements the club and provides academic grounding in innovation, business planning, and leadership.
The Entrepreneurship Club is open to all majors and welcomes anyone curious about starting a business, collaborating on projects, or learning the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.
“This club is all about empowering students to think big and make things happen,” said Dr. Jeb Gorham, Professor of Sport Management and E-Club co-advisor.
