  • Midway University Adds Starks Name to Building

February 27, 2020

In a special event held on campus yesterday, the Midway University Board of Trustees and President John P. Marsden, made the announcement that the Learning Resource Center would now bear the name Starks Center.

When the Learning Resource Center was constructed in 2010, it replaced the long-standing Starks Hall, named by John Price Starks in honor of his father, James Madison Starks a former trustee. John Price Starks was also a long-time trustee of the Kentucky Female Orphan School and behind many of the school’s building projects and campus plans during his tenure.

During the formal presentation, Board Chair and Alumna Donna Moore Campbell ’62 had this to say:
“In honor of the many years of service of James Madison Starks and John Price Starks, The Midway University Board of Trustees voted at our November 2019 meeting to return the name of Starks to the building that now sits on the original footprint of Starks Hall to continue to honor the impact of the Starks family to the University.”

“On behalf of the entire Midway University Board of Trustees, let it be known that from this date forward, the Learning Resource Center is now, and forever, to be known as Starks Center.”

In addition to lettering added to the building exterior, there will be an interior plaque noting the rededication event and the new name as Starks Center. The historic bronze plaque bearing the image of John Price Starks has already been hung in the lobby of the Starks Center and unveiled at the event.
