Ways Parents & Families Can Support Their Students
- Encourage exploration: Support your student in trying new experiences, attending workshops, and exploring diverse career paths. Encourage them to attend career fairs and networking events to gain exposure to different industries and opportunities.
- Promote early engagement with Career Services: Encourage your student to connect with the Department of Career Services early in their college journey. This department can help with goal-setting, resume building, interview preparation, and internship or job searches. Early engagement often leads to greater confidence and career readiness.
- Forster self-reflection and goal-setting: Ask your student about their interests, strengths, and career aspirations. Help them reflect on how their academic choices align with their long-term goals.
- Support skill development: Encourage your student to pursue internships, volunteer work, part-time jobs, and leadership opportunities. These experiences build practical skills, expand professional networks, and strengthen resumes.
- Celebrate progress and resilience: College is full of learning experiences, including setbacks. Encourage your student to view challenges as opportunities for growth and celebrate achievements, big or small.
- Stay informed: Keep an open line of communication and show interest in your student’s career development. Provide guidance when asked, but allow them space to make their own decisions and learn from experiences.
