Emily earned her first degree, an Associate’s Degree in Nursing, from Midway in 1995. Congratulations to her for completing her second degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), this summer. Emily is a perioperative (surgical) nurse at Frankfort Regional Medical Center in her hometown of Frankfort, Kentucky. She told us, “I have been a registered nurse for more than 22 years. The education I received at Midway prepared me for a variety of jobs in various work settings, including hospital-based, public health, and private sector nursing positions. Midway provided me with the tools I needed to make the most of my career. I have worked alongside many Midway nursing graduates. Midway gives nurses the skills they need to lead.”
Emily said Midway represents what is possible, yet still felt like home. The small campus is beautiful, easily accessible, and welcoming. Her instructors wanted her to succeed and pushed her to do her best. Her favorite Midway memory was from the spring semester of 1994 when Central Kentucky had record snowfalls. Emily said, “Even when classes weren’t canceled, the campus was covered in deep snow. I remember hanging out between classes in the dining hall drinking hot chocolate, or in the library to study and stay warm. That semester was challenging for students and instructors, but we all learned to be patient and flexible.”
When asked about advice to future Midway graduates she shared, “Throughout your life and career there will always be opportunities to learn and grow. Don’t be afraid to pursue and embrace those opportunities.”
Emily has been married to her husband, Richard, for 21 years. They have three children: Aidan (17), Christian (14), and Olivia (12).
