Edna Shearers Barber ’72, ’94 received her ADN and BSN from Midway. Hailing from West Liberty, Kentucky, Edna currently lives in Nicholasville. Edna said, “Midway Junior College provided me with a strong foundation for my nursing career. My BSN education broadened that liberal arts foundation along with community health nursing, evidence-based research, and leadership components which served me well as I pursued a Master's in Nursing which I completed in 1999.”
Edna, who retired the “first time” in 2007 after a 33-year career as an RN with the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, has been on the nursing faculty at Midway since 2009. When asked about her favorite Midway memory, she couldn't name just one - Folksingers, Night of Lights, Friendship Circle, May Day activities with Ms. Margaret Ware Parrish, and serving as May Queen in 1972.

Edna has been a long-time and faithful volunteer of the Midway University Alumni Association Board. After finishing her third term as President last year, she is currently serving as Immediate-Past President. She has also served as Secretary-Treasurer and Vice-President. She feels very strongly that graduates have an important role as loyal alumni - assisting students, and supporting their alma mater with their time, talents, and financial resources. She loves coming back for reunion each year.
When not at Midway as a faculty member or volunteer, Edna participates in various activities with her church family at Edgewood Baptist in Nicholasville. She also enjoys photographing wildlife and wildflowers on her farm.
Her advice to future grads is to be willing to sacrifice, study, and persevere to succeed. Edna said, “A higher education degree is the ‘pathway of opportunity’ to a satisfying career and security.”
