Midway University Announces Faculty Promotions
The Office of Academic Affairs at Midway University announced the promotion of three faculty members for the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year.
The promoted faculty members along with their new titles include:
- Dr. Janice Holland, Professor
- Dr. Becky Briley, Associate Professor
- Dr. Gina DeArth-Pendley, Associate Professor
Midway University faculty ranks are instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor. Initial rank is determined at time of hire based upon definitions in the Midway University Faculty Handbook. Faculty are eligible to apply for promotion after serving six years in their current rank. Faculty up for promotion submit a portfolio documenting the three areas evaluated: teaching, service, and scholarship which is evaluated by the Committee for Promotion and Retention. The Committee makes its recommendations to the Vice President of Academic Affairs who then makes final recommendations to the President.
Two faculty members received promotions last Spring that took effect this current academic year 2020-21. Those were:

- Dr. Edie McClellan, Associate Professor
2021-22 Promoted Faculty Bios
Dr. Janice Holland, Professor
Dr. Janice L Holland has been at Midway University since Fall 2004 and was promoted to full professor in the equine program. Dr. Holland received her Bachelor of Science in Animal Production from Penn State in 1990. She then attended Virginia Tech for both her master’s and Doctoral degrees. She received her Master of Science in Animal Science in 1994 and her Doctorate in Animal and Poultry Science in 1998. Dr. Holland serves as Chair of the Department of Equine Studies at Midway University.
Dr. Becky Briley, Associate Professor
Dr. Rebecca Briley has been teaching at Midway University since August 2014 and was promoted to associate professor in the English program. Dr. Briley earned her Bachelor of Arts in English, Education and History at the University of Kentucky. She went on to also earn her master’s and Doctoral degrees in English at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Briley is the editor of the University’s online literary magazine, The Midway Muse, and directs theater productions at the University.
Dr. Gina DeArth-Pendley, Associate Professor
Dr. Gina DeArth-Pendley joined Midway University in August 2014 and was promoted to associate professor in the psychology program. She received her master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical/Counseling Psychology at the University of Notre Dame and her bachelor’s degree with Honors in Psychology at Indiana University. Currently, she also provides counseling services for students through the University’s Counseling Services.
2020-21 Promoted Faculty Bios
Dr. John Delfino, Associate Professor
Dr. John Delfino joined Midway University in 1996 and was promoted to associate professor in the biology program. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received his Master of Science in Biology (emphasis in ecology and evolution) from West Virginia University, and earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Biology (emphasis in ecology, and evolution) from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Edie McClellan, Associate Professor
Dr. Edie McClellan joined Midway University in 2007 and was promoted to associate professor in the psychology program. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Kentucky. She earned her master’s and Doctoral degrees in Lifespan Developmental Psychology at West Virginia University, the first program of its kind in the world, and developed a special interest in socioemotional development and gerontology. Dr. McClellan serves as Chair of the Department of Social Sciences at Midway University.
