Midway University Names Sherrill Smith Interim Athletic Director
(Midway, Ky.) – Midway University has announced that head soccer coach Sherrill G. Smith will oversee the school’s athletics department as Interim Athletic Director.
In addition to a long career in K-12 education and coaching, Smith has solid experience in athletic administration. He was Commissioner of the Kentucky All “A” State Soccer Cup Tournament from 1999-2012, has served on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Soccer Committee and has worked with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
“Sherrill Smith is a great asset to Midway University athletics. He is a talented teacher and administrator who can work with our student athletes to help them be their best on and off the field,” said Dr. John P. Marsden, President.
Smith will begin his first season coaching Midway’s soccer team after spending 30 years leading boys’ soccer at Frankfort High School, becoming one of the top-ten winningest coaches in Kentucky. In 2014, he received several awards for his work, including Great Lakes Coach of the Year for small schools by the NSCAA, Kentucky High School Soccer Coaches Association (KHSSCA) Coach of the Year and the Central Kentucky Soccer Officials Association (CKSOA) Coach of the Year. Smith also spent many years coaching girls’ tennis.
Smith holds the Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Masters and Rank 1 in Education from Georgetown College. In addition, he holds Instructional Supervisor, Director of Pupil Personnel and Superintendent Certification from Eastern Kentucky University. He recently retired as the Assistant Superintendent for Frankfort Independent Schools.
Smith lives in Frankfort, Ky. with his wife of 35 years, Ruth. The couple has four children and three grandchildren.
