The program is designed to prepare Homeland Security professionals who will be able to work in a variety of industries and corporate settings and work with vulnerability assessment, risk management and other vital areas in Homeland Security awareness.
Midway’s program is unique in the nation and is believed to be the first of its kind. Not a law enforcement-specific program, this degree will appeal to those in management positions who wish to work with compliance of local, state, and federal regulations, and community members in matters of safety.
Graduates will be qualified as follows:
- To conduct strategic planning for organizational change and development (empowering and re-engineering) for corporate security in the changed environment consequent on the targeting of America by terrorist groups.
- To coordinate compliance with public policies and regulations relating to homeland security, whether originating at the federal, state, or local levels.
- To manage corporate interaction with first-responders from local and national law enforcement, fire safety, rescue, public health, military, and governmental sectors.
- To develop and oversee implementation of procedures to screen personnel during the hiring process, and establish security procedures to protect employees, visitors, customers, and the corporation’s facilities, resources, and processes.
- To conduct continuity of operations planning to manage the consequences of terrorist attack on the corporation, its locality, and/or it suppliers.
- To manage design and implementation of corporate cyber-security protocols and procedures to protect corporate records, data, and transactions.
The B.A. in Homeland Security Corporate Management and Assessment is considered a professional business degree program. It is a degree completion program offered in a cohort format. It consists of a 45 credit hour major with 39 credit hours of General Education, 9 credit hours of Supporting Courses and 31 credit hours of Elective Credit for a total of 124 hours for the degree. This online degree completion program is convenient for students with busy schedules, who appreciate the accelerated format and the anytime, anywhere availability. Midway College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Colleges (SACS/COC) to grant baccalaureate and associate degrees.
The Homeland Security profession is one of the most challenging and leading-edge needs in the modern business world. The war on terrorism following the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, is an asymmetric conflict unlike prior conflicts, creating an immediate need in industry and the corporate world for qualified professionals to assess vulnerability and design, implement, and manage security programs which are compliant, current, and dynamic.
The student who graduates with this degree will be prepared for Homeland Security Corporate Management and Assessment in many major areas of the professional sphere, including such industries as:
- The computer industry and corporations reliant on the management and security of computerized data.
- Financial institutions, both corporations and agencies, including insurers.
- Food-related industries, ranging from agriculture and horticulture to food manufacture, food preparation and food service.
- Utilities, including power generation and water purification.
- Hospitals, medical offices, and healthcare facilities.
- Industrial complexes, including advanced manufacturing facilities.
- Public transportation and travel industries.
- Retail environments ranging from multi-retailer shopping malls to national and transnational retail chains.
- Public agencies tasked with homeland security for their localities or regions.
- Import/export corporations and those that transport goods nationally and internationally.
- Corporations reliant on overseas suppliers, processors, or customers.
- Real estate management corporations.
- Students must have completed between 40 and 60 credit hours of college work
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.50
- Be a minimum of 23 years old
- Been accepted into the program by the Program Admissions Committee
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Corporate Homeland Security Management has been developed to meet the educational needs of non-traditional students returning to college to complete a degree at times convenient to their busy schedules. This unique program features cohort-based instruction aimed at individuals over 23 years of age who have at least two years of college credit.
The student typically will have completed 40 - 60 credit hours of college credit before commencement of professional course work. Exceptions to these criteria may be made on a case-by-case basis as judged by a program admissions committee. The modular sequence of the upper-level courses recognizes the needs and characteristics of adult learners while emphasizing themes such as problem solving, critical thinking, self-analysis, communication, and ethical decision-making.
Specifically, this program is designed to prepare Corporate Homeland Security professionals who are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to function as managers of corporate or industrial security programs and who are knowledgeable in state-of-the-art vulnerability assessment, risk management, consequence management, disaster recovery, and continuity techniques and technologies. Today’s Corporate Homeland Security Managers must not only respond to the challenge of recruiting and retaining talent, they must also understand federal, state, and local regulations, processes and resources so that they may assure not only corporate compliance but also corporate responsibility to the local community.
