The primary responsibility at the Communication Center is answering the telephone and directing calls to the appropriate person/department. An electronic directory is used to search for extension numbers.
The candidate should have a general knowledge of Midway College departments – academic and business (this is not referring to the academic business department). A pleasant telephone voice and the desire to direct callers to the appropriate person/department in the shortest time possible is mandatory. Between calls, there is opportunity for study.
Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Communication Center manager. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to cover the Communication Center during the lunch break from 1-2 p.m. The Work Study is expected to conduct herself in a professional manner found in an office setting. Supervisor guidance is always available.
The Communication Center is often the first “real person contact” a caller receives when telephoning the College. The Work Study will gain experience in customer service by determining what the caller wants by being a good listener, and learning how to deal with difficult calls without losing composure. The student will find these skills are valuable in the work place, and in her personal life.
