The purpose of the program is to continue the legacy of what Ruth stood for by providing women with leadership opportunities and financial assistance while they become actively involved in the community. Additionally, the purpose is to use Ruth’s life and good works as a model to inspire and encourage other women to serve and lead in manners that are appropriate to their own talents, interests and sense of calling.

Each year a rising junior is selected to fill the role of Ruth Slack Roach Scholar for her junior and senior years in school. Scholars are selected on the basis of their commitment to service, involvement on campus, demonstrated leadership, and ability to inspire and mentor other students.
