Midway College Hosts Commencement Services

295 Students Receive Their Diplomas; First MAT Class Graduates

Midway, KY- Midway College is pleased to announce those students who received their degrees at the May 11 commencement ceremony. A total of 295 students (241 undergraduates; 54 graduates) who successfully completed their academic work during the academic year were invited to be part of the commencement.

The College was honored to welcome Dr. Bonnie Baskin as this year’s commencement speaker. Dr. Baskin is a microbiologist and entrepreneur. Through her career she has worked as a research scientist at the University of Minnesota; founded and sold two medical-related start-up companies for more than $200 million; and is currently building a science center in rural Texas in addition to managing an active horse breeding and racing business. Baskin, with her son, Adam Corndorf, recently founded Blue Heaven Farm, which owns about 15 broodmares and is located in Versailles, Kentucky. Her commencement address to the graduates focused upon the importance of recognizing, embracing and pursuing opportunities that are presented to them during the course of their careers.

Two student awards were presented during the commencement ceremony – The President’s Award and the Midway Woman Award.

Ashley Marcum ’13Ashley Marcum ’13 (Winchester, Kentucky) Equine Studies receives the President’s Award from Dr. John P. Marsden, President, Midway College

This year’s President’s Award recipient was Ashley Marcum of Winchester, Kentucky who earned dual degrees – a B.A. in Equine Studies: Equine Management and B.S. in Equine Studies: Equine Health & Rehabilitation. The President’s Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a Midway College graduate. This award is presented to a graduate who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, and service. Moreover, the recipient of this award must have maintained at least a 3.75 grade point average. Marcum graduated with a perfect cumulative grade point average of a 4.0, while balancing the demands of a rigorous academic discipline and outstanding commitment to Midway College. Marcum will continue her studies and has been accepted into graduate school at the University of Kentucky this fall.

LaTasha Jackson ‘13LaTasha Jackson ‘13 (Elmore, Alabama) Sport Management receives the Midway Woman Award from Midway College Board Chair Donna R. Moore ‘62

The Midway Woman Award was presented to LaTasha Jackson of Elmore, Alabama who earned her B.A. in Sport Management. This award recognizes the core values that the institution holds as critical for our Women’s College graduates’ future success. Those are that the Midway Woman will be someone who is poised and stands ready to serve her community and country. A Midway Woman is proud to stand up and take initiative and be a leader in her work, at home or in her community. And equally important she is graduating from Midway College prepared to represent the College as a positive role model. Ms. Jackson embodies all of these core values. Jackson has been accepted into the Kroger Management program and begins her work with them this summer.
