Medical Assistants perform administrative and clinical procedures, assist with patient care management and often conduct managerial functions. Students who successfully complete this program are prepared to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Medical Coding

This program prepares students for the field of health information and medical records as a medical coder. Students who successfully complete this program are prepared to sit for the medical certification exams offered by the American Academy of Professional Codersand the American Health Information Management Association.

The Medical Coding Associate Degree program features accelerated instruction and prepares students with an appropriate foundation of skills and knowledge directly applicable to the healthcare support industry. The program emphasizes writing; computer applications; health information management; medical vocabulary; structure and function of the human body; pathological processes; drugs; medical coding, billing, law and ethics.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition states that employment is expected to grow faster than average in the areas of medical records and health information. In 2006, these two areas held about 170,000 jobs. The projected employment in these areas is 200,000 by 2016.

According to Kentucky Occupational Outlook to 2014 (2006, p. 4) produced by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, Labor Market Information, “nearly one-third of the new jobs created between 2004 and 2014 will be in three very large occupational groups.” One of the large groups, Healthcare Support Occupations is projected to grow at a fast rate of 24.4 percent because of the need to care for aging Kentuckians due to their longer life expectancy.

All open enrollment online courses are available to all students regardless of cohort term or degree. These online courses enable students to learn in areas of interest, earn transferable credit and gain a competitive edge in the job market — all without sacrificing commitments to job or family.

By taking our free-standing online courses, students also enjoy increased flexibility when scheduling their on-campus courses. Moreover, interested students do not have to be enrolled in a specific degree program in order to sign up for classes.

Whether looking to fulfill a final degree requirement or merely gain extra knowledge, students can enroll in Midway’s open enrollment courses at any time.
