Academic Affairs Assistant

The employee will provide clerical assistance in the Office of Academic Affairs. Duties and responsibilities require student to check mail/fax and deliver, input computer programs, filing, answer phones, copy/collate materials and operate mail. Qualified candidates must have good writing skills and knowledge of MS Windows, Word and Excel. The employee should have a good knowledge of the college, its functions and the location of its departments. Experience working with the public, greeting visitors and good telephone skills would be helpful.

Academic Support

Writing Lab Assistant

The Writing Center is an academic support program that falls under the direction of the Office of the VP of Academic Affairs. Writing Center tutors are required to assist Midway College students in developing written communication skills. Writing Center tutors may be called upon to help students study for an exam, prepare for an in-class oral presentation, improve reading comprehension skills, hone class discussion skills, grammar and the ability to apply the knowledge to written communications. In addition, tutors must feel comfortable interacting one-on-one with other students and interested in becoming a teacher at the high school or college level. Applicants for this position should have cycled through ENG 101 and ENG 102 and must submit a writing example to the Director of the Writing Center.

Admissions

Admissions Student Assistant

The position helps the admissions office prepare materials sent to prospective students, assist with file management and gives campus tours. The position also helps all admissions staff with special projects and mailings. Specific responsibilities include coding marketing materials with marketing codes, stuffing marketing materials, compiling marketing packets, typing labels, inventory, copying, data entry, running errands on campus, meeting prospective students and their families, and answering the front desk telephone. The ability to work autonomously, typing skills, some computer experience and attention to detail are required.

Athletics

Athletics Assistant

Responsibilities: Upkeep of Athletic facilities in the Student center including gym, locker rooms, weight room, and cardio room. Care for and inventory uniforms as needed for five teams. Support administrative needs of five coaches. Broadcast announcements regarding competitions, meetings, and events. Produce recruiting mailings under direction of head coaches for all teams. Keep game statistics and generate reports. Gather information on schools in KIAC and other opponents. Provide overall support to the A.D.

 Biology

Biology Assistant

The purpose of this position is to assist Biology/Math faculty and staff in preparing for laboratories and lectures.
Biology- The student will assist in preparing for and cleaning up after laboratories and maintaining general cleanliness. All duties are integrated and can change daily to include: preparing microbiological media, laboratory solutions, and setups for the biological laboratories; cleaning and disinfecting counters, tabletops and microscopes; washing glassware; typing and copying materials for faculty and staff; maintaining teaching materials and inventory of laboratory supplies; answering telephone and taking messages; preparing orders for supplies; answering taking inventory of supplies shipments. Observance of safety rules and regulations for laboratory work a must. Appropriate dress for duties is required. No experience is necessary. All training will be provided. Students must report to work on time. An interest in biological sciences and typing and/or computer skills helpful, but not required. Twenty-four hour written notification for any planned absence is required.

Math Assistant

Staffers should be interested in, and capable of, working helpfully one-on-one with students.

Business Office

Accounting Student Assistant

The student selected will be responsible for assisting payroll, human resources and accounting with daily business tasks and errands. Duties include, but are not limited to, filing, copying, recording absence reports, verification of time cards, sending out packets to new adjuncts, AS400 journal data entry and organizing/set up archive file room. Good organizational skills are a must and some secretarial and accounting skills a plus. Must be willing to work with various types of situations. Business Office Student Assistant

The function of this position is to provide assistance to the Business Office, including journal entries, miscellaneous filing and copying. Communication Center Student Assistant

Chemistry

Chemistry Assistant

The function of the chemistry lab assistant is to assist instructors, especially in the preparation and clean up procedures for the chemistry laboratory courses. Responsibilities of the position include preparation of stock solutions, maintenance of chemical and non-chemical inventories, washing glassware, cleaning lab, running errands, photocopying and assistance with grading. Depending on the student's experience, she may be expected to assist in the supervision of undergraduate chemistry laboratory sections. One year of college level chemistry is desirable, but not required.

Equine Barn Assistant

The stable assistant will assist the barn and student barn manager in daily maintenance of horse herd stables. Responsibilities include feeding horses in the morning and evening in weekdays according to a post schedule, daily maintenance of barn and equine facility equipment, bringing in horses for class and grooming if time allows, treating sick or injured horses, and assisting with weekend chores such as feeding and stall cleaning as assigned.

Those who are Equine Study majors or have two years of "hands on horse" experience are preferred. Experience in operating farm machinery helpful. Good communication and telephone skills helpful.

Equine Student Barn Manager

The student barn manager will assist the barn manager in supervising the daily maintenance of the herd and stables. Student Assistant

The library student assistant performs circulation-related activities at the circulation desk and assists library patrons to utilize the facilities, collections and services of the library. Responsibilities include circulation and reserve procedures for students, faculty and other patrons in a courteous and competent manner; answering incoming telephone calls with correct protocol and taking legible accurate messages; re-shelving all materials accurately; maintaining a neat and orderly work environment, including the library's public areas; completing correct opening and closing routines when scheduled; and self reading when assigned. This position will also be responsible for maintaining a quiet atmosphere, participating in special projects as directed and knowledge of library staff positions sufficient to make referrals. Arrangement for a substitute in case of absence is also a requirement.
Qualifications include a service-oriented individual, great attention to detail, dependability, prompt, the ability to work without supervision and the ability too climb stairs and handle heavy books and equipment. Computer skills are required. All students are expected to work some nights and weekends as needed. All academic majors are eligible and library experience is preferred.

Teacher’s Education

Teacher’s Education Assistant

The purpose of this position is to assist the Teacher Education Division in preparation for accreditation visits by SACS and EPSB. Records will be maintained for all teacher education students-campus day on SCD cohorts.

Qualifications include timeliness, cooperation and dependability. The individual should also be comfortable with the use of Microsoft products (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, and Access). The position will report primarily to the division of chairs, but will help all faculty members in the Teacher Education Division. The student may be scheduled to work with each faculty member on a regular schedule.
