Midway College has a long history of preparing educators. Current programs continue this tradition by offering three broad categories of programs: Primary through grade five (P-5) elementary, grades five through nine (5-9) middle school, and secondary education English, Math, and Biology. Special education Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD) is a dual certificate with either elementary or middle school.
Delivery System. The Midway College Education program is delivered in three formats (a) traditional semester format for the Women’s College; (b) accelerated evening/weekend eight week format for co-educational adults completing the degree in Education; and (c) also online in eight week segments for co-educational adults in degree completion – except for methods classes and student teaching. Education is also offered for men and women in an accelerated format in the evening/weekends through the School for Career Development (SCD) with sites located across Kentucky in collaboration with the community colleges. The LBD program is offered online except for student teaching.
All bachelor degree education majors are required to go through three checkpoints prior to graduation: Checkpoint I – Formal admission to the teacher education program. Checkpoint II – Entry to student teaching (student teaching involves the equivalent of a semester prior to graduation). Checkpoint III – Completion of the teacher education program, following student teaching. Each checkpoint involves a portfolio, an interview, and additional requirements specific to each checkpoint. Students are permitted to enroll in a limited number of classes before being formally admitted to the program.
Checkpoint requirements are described in the Teacher Education Handbook available in the teacher education office or online and include:
- state testing requirements (minimum ACT score of 21 or PRAXIS I pre-professional skills tests qualifying scores, and PRAXIS II professional testing requirements specific to each certificate area);
- 80 hours of field placement prior to student teaching;
- 6 diversity hours minimum of multicultural field placement; and
- local personnel requirements (TB test, liability insurance, criminal records check).
The Bachelor of Arts degree program in elementary education trains teachers to work in elementary schools. Graduates will meet the requirements for certification to teach kindergarten through grade five in Kentucky . Through reciprocal agreements, students should be able to achieve certification in some other states.
Each elementary education major must have at least one area of emphasis. Some students meet the requirements for a minor while completing their area of emphasis. An area of emphasis can be in English/Communication, Mathematics, Fine Arts/Humanities, Social/Behavioral Sciences or Science.
A minimum grade of “C” is required in all courses required by Teacher Education program.
