Computer Information Systems
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Computer Information Systems Management
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Computer Information Systems Management (CISM) has been developed to meet the educational needs of non-traditional students returning to college to complete a degree at times convenient to their busy schedules. This unique program features cohort-based instruction aimed at students who have at least two years of college credit.
The student typically will have completed a minimum of 40 college credit hours before commencement of professional course work. Exceptions to these criteria are made on a case-by-case basis as judged by a program admissions committee. The modular sequence of the upper-level courses recognizes the needs and characteristics of adult learners while emphasizing themes such as problem solving, critical thinking, self-analysis, communication and ethical decision-making. Students possessing an associate degree in Computer Information Systems are also prime candidates to pursue this degree.
This program is designed to prepare students to become managers of computer information systems (CIS) departments within an organization. It will also prepare students to become system analysts, web publishers, computer software engineers (programmers), and computer support specialists. Students will learn management and technical skills required of CIS professionals today.

Associate of Arts Degree in Computer Information Systems
Computer Information Systems (CIS) is a field of study ideal for people with a strong interest in computers and business. In general, graduates of CIS will work in a business environment and have the primary responsibility of designing, developing and supporting business-related software and systems. With the Internet playing such an important role in the life of organizations, CIS professionals also identify and develop ways of using this resource to help a business stay competitive in a global economy.
The CIS major at Midway College is designed for two groups of students: (a) students who will graduate with an associate’s degree in CIS who intend to enter the business-related computer job market at the junior level and (b) students who are pursuing a baccalaureate degree in another discipline, usually business and/or organizational administrative leadership, but who wish to also earn an associate’s degree in CIS. It is fairly common for a four-year student to simultaneously earn both an associate’s degree in CIS and a bachelor’s degree in another area. Coupling an associate’s degree in CIS with a separate bachelor’s degree has been “economically beneficial” for Midway graduates entering the job market. In today’s ever-changing technological world, employers look favorably upon applicants who have an educational background in the computer field as well as their primary area of academic studies.
CIS majors must complete 18 hours (6 classes) in the CIS core/support but have the option of choosing one of two tracks (programming or web publishing) to complete the CIS degree. These areas are very visible in today’s job market.
