* Students interested in Pre-medicine, Pre-dentistry, Pre-veterinary, or Pre-pharmacy
should declare Biology as a major. |
The biology curriculum was designed to meet the needs of students entering professional schools such as pharmacy, medicine, veterinary medicine, and graduate programs in physical and occupational therapy. Additionally it prepares a student to enter graduate programs in the biological sciences. There are some entry-level positions available to the person with a bachelor’s in biology, such as biology-related fields with state government and laboratory research positions.
The course offerings include field biology with study in the natural environment, laboratory courses in developmental, microscopic and gross anatomy, microbiology and histology, and cell biology and genetics. There are strong supporting courses in the physical sciences and mathematics. Part of the curriculum is designed to educate students in methods of scientific research, use of scientific literature and writing for publication. Throughout the curriculum there is emphasis on observational and problem-solving skills.
Midway College is committed to training women for the sciences, encouraging them to excel in their fields and to assume positions of leadership.
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology will prepare women for competitive entry into professional schools such as medicine or graduate school in the biological sciences.
The student before graduation will:
- Demonstrate proficiency in computational skills and methods of problem solving including the scientific method.
- Demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory skills.
- Complete supporting courses in the physical sciences and mathematics that provide a basis of enhancement for understanding the biological sciences.
- Demonstrate cognition of biology at all levels of organization in life forms.
- Differentiate between the functions and morphology of the biological systems in life forms.
- Explain the role of homeostatic mechanisms in vertebrate animals.
- Demonstrate understanding of the interactions of organisms and their environment.
- Perform basic biological research.
- Describe evolutionary concepts within the core principles of the biological sciences.
- Demonstrate cognition of genetics and application of these principles in today’s world.
- Distinguish between and characterize the three domains and the kingdoms of life.
- Describe the developmental processes of the vertebrate animal.
