With the mission of “empowering students as leaders,” Midway College requires all students, as a portion of their capstone course, to present a leadership portfolio. This portfolio summarizes the student’s growth in their leadership skills throughout their tenure at Midway College. To support students in the development of their portfolios, the Office of Student Affairs coordinates a Leadership Lecture Series each semester where speakers from both on and off campus engage students in discussions surrounding a variety of leadership topics.

In May, 2010, the Midway College Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name the series the Dr. Lilialyce Akers Leadership Lecture Series. The lecture series is named in honor of the late, former Midway Junior College professor and Board of Trustee Member. Dr. Akers embraced the principles of leadership as she served as a professor at Midway Junior College, Morehead State University, the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville. Furthermore, she traveled the world working with the United Nations promoting equal rights and sustainability. Midway College will honor her memory through the lecture series, by equipping students with the skills needed to serve as leaders within their respective communities.
