After doing well re-entering KIAC & NAIA play during the fall 2008 soccer season, the 2009-2010 Midway College soccer eagles look to build on last season’s (2-2) KIAC record. The 2008 season saw many records and firsts for Midway. The Eagles finished the year with their best KIAC season record since the 2000 season, head coach Brad Turpin, Jr.’s first-ever KIAC Coach of the Year honor, and several conference players of the week throughout the season.
"All things considered, last year’s season was the best a coach could ask for in the competitive women’s soccer environment that has developed over the past few years,” said Turpin as he enters his third season at the helm.
"We were low on players last season, played many games with 1 or 2 substitutes; all of which is expected for a 1st year team. Last year’s team worked very hard. I couldn’t have asked more of them. I was proud to be a part of the reemergence of Midway College Soccer."
Turpin hopes the Midway College soccer program will continue on its current path of development. With 15 new players on the roster, the Midway College soccer team begins the season 30 strong! Although the roster is comprised of mostly freshman and sophomores, Coach Turpin is looking for vast improvement over last year’s team:
“Recruiting went very well last year. We were able to bring in (15) solid soccer players. Combine these players with our core returning sophomores, (1) junior, & (5) seniors, and we’ll be highly competitive in the next couple of years.”
As with all young teams, the fall 2009 season could have its share of up & downs. The schedule includes some tough out of conference teams. Coach Turpin comments:
“We can’t get better unless we player better competition. This is a huge pill to swallow for some players. They have to understand it will make us better in the long run.”
A tough out of conference schedule will prepare us for KIAC play. The KIAC introduces a new team in 2009, Cincinnati Christian University. The additional team (bringing the conference to six teams) allows the KIAC tournament winner an automatic bid to the NAIA tournament.
“An automatic bid to nationals is extremely exciting. It gives us a chance to not only surprise our conference, but surprise the NAIA!”
Supporting Athletic Director, Wendy Hoffman’s message, Coach Turpin says:
“Along with 1st year Assistant Coach, Sal Mirza, we look forward to preparing an outstanding group of student-athletes whose legacy will be that of champions.”
