Dear Midway College Alumni, Students, Faculty, Staff & Friends:
What a wonderful year it has been. The alumni board has been very busy and we have worked hard to make Midway always feel like “home”. We’ve planted hundreds of tulip bulbs to honor our deceased and carried out numerous service projects this past year for both our day and evening students. This year at reunion we celebrated all of our alumni including the Class of 1956 as well as the life of Janet Sue Mitchell Brown ( 09/02/36 - 02/23/04 ) from the Class of 1956 and her life-long legacy to Midway College . Nine years after her graduation from Midway, at the age of 29, she was believed to be the nation's youngest Dean in her field of education when she became Dean of Women at Midway Junior College in 1965. Even though Janet is not here today to celebrate her 50 th Reunion , her memory lives on.
This past year, our Alumni board, her fellow classmates, students, family and friends have initiated and generously supported the naming of the Janet Sue Mitchell Brown ’56 Faculty Office in the Anne Hart Raymond Center for Science and Mathematics. What a wonderful way to celebrate her life. We are also delighted to have her family members join us, as we honor her. This includes her Aunt Irene Mitchell Barber ’31, celebrating her 75 th Anniversary and another Aunt Jeanette Mitchell Atkinson ’37. Other award winners this past year included Mary Ann Lunsford Bach ’55 , the Midway Medallion, Norma Bledsoe Gould ’46 , the Distinguished Alumni Award, Judy Marcum , the Parrish-Pinkerton Award, and the Midway Nursing Home Task Force the Ruth Slack Roach Award for their work on The Homeplace.
Midway has always been committed to making a difference in the lives of our students since 1847, and because of our alumni, faculty, friends and family this tradition of Optimism, Opportunity , and Compassion continues .
If you would like to get involved with our board, become part of this legacy to Janet Sue, make a gift to the Midway College Annual Fund, or add to an existing scholarship you can pledge your gift today or call the Alumni Office at 859-846-5485 or visit www.midway.edu.
It is the perfect time to “Save the Date” for reunion, which is always the first weekend of June. I do hope we all celebrate our alma mater together. Also, take a moment and update your information for the upcoming alumni directory through Harris Publishing when your information comes. It is so important for us all to stay connected.
Sincerely,
Edna Shearers Barber ’72 & ’94
Alumni Board President
