Midway College will significantly increase enrollment and in the process will enter the top ten institutions in Kentucky in terms of the number of bachelor’s degrees granted annually by 2013. A new classroom building will be essential as the hub of this massive outreach that extends across Kentucky and beyond and includes increased enrollment in the critical professions of nursing and teacher education.
This new classroom building will be the central facility driving the delivery of on-campus and off-campus educational programs. It must be equipped for this intense work. The result will be the hub of a rapidly growing college that reaches out to students across the country; all rooms will drive enhanced student services; all rooms will make Midway College more efficient and create a more enriched student and faculty experience:
1. We have 11 faculty offices; we need 48.
2. We have two administrative academic suites; we need five.
3. We have makeshift meeting space; we need four conference rooms.
4. We have no wireless internet; we need state-of-the-art facilities for Midway College Online outreach.
5. We have classrooms with basic chalk-boards; we need smart board technology for faculty presentations.
6. We have no handicap accessibility; we need to be open to be accessible to all students.
7. We have no equine laboratory; we need an equine laboratory to facilitate student equine research.
8. We instruct the largest nursing class in an auditorium; we need a state-of-the-art classroom for 80 students.
9. We have a makeshift teacher education resource center; we need a well appointed resource center for our future teachers.
10. We have no student lounge; we need to facilitate student collaboration and camaraderie.
The renovation is necessary for Midway College to double its nursing program enrollment. The Nursing Classroom will be constructed to accommodate 80 students so that we may grow our nursing program to 240 students. Currently, this class meets an auditorium with instructors working on a stage. Only one private Kentucky college has produced more nurses than Midway College, and Midway’s NCLEX pass rate is more than 98 percent over the past three years, which is higher than the national and state averages. The accelerated Associate Degree in Nursing program produces a registered nurse, with no previous training, more efficiently than any other program in the state.
Given the nursing shortage in Kentucky, this project becomes an important component to quality health care in Kentucky.
The Midway College equine program attracts students from 30 states, and the equestrian facilities are excellent, including three riding arenas, 160 acres and three stable facilities. However, we have no equine laboratory for science research. The program’s strategic direction includes aligning the equine program with Thoroughbred industry needs, and this laboratory is essential for this student training.
Midway College has administered one of the largest teacher education programs in Kentucky (average approximately 420 students) over the past five years, and this program is administered in the office space, which housed the library in the 1940s. Education students must have top-notch teacher resources as they progress through mock classroom training to the student teaching component.
