Midway’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) blended program can help you realize the dream of becoming a world class teacher; providing exceptional education to students.

The Master of Arts in Teaching program at Midway College is designed for individuals who hold a non-teaching undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college or university and desire to teach middle and/or high school in their content area or to work with children with special needs P-12.

Blended Format (on campus and online)
The MAT program at Midway College is structured to meet the needs of nontraditional students. The program is offered in a blended format. While a major portion of the required courses are offered online, MAT Candidates participate in over 200 hours of clinical field based (school classroom) experiences, workshops, seminars, professional development, mock interviews, symposiums and other relevant events. The program also includes an on-campus Orientation Course (EDU 500) and 14 weeks of student teaching. The program structure provides nontraditional students the opportunity to pursue their dream of becoming a world class teacher while maintaining their other responsibilities.

The courses are paced so as not to overwhelm but to ensure each participant the opportunity to master the pedagogy and strategies critical to being a great teacher. The MAT is completed in either four or five semesters depending on the route chosen by each individual (see below).

Two MAT Routes
There are two routes offered in the Master of Arts in Teaching:

1. The first is for individuals who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college in English, mathematics, social studies, or biological science. Individuals who hold a degree, or its equivalent, in one of the above content areas may earn an MAT for teaching middle grades (5-9) language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies. They may also pursue certification to teach secondary (8-12) English, mathematics, or biology. Individuals may also earn dual (5-12) certification to teach middle AND high school content.

2. The second route individuals can pursue is for those who hold a non-teaching graduate or graduate degree from an accredited college and desire to teach students with special needs. Those individuals can earn an MAT focused on Learning and Behavior Disorders (P-12).

Eight Certifications
MAT includes eight possible certifications:
MAT in Middle School Certification in English, Math, Science or Social Studies;
Secondary Certification in Biology, English, Math or Learning and Behavior Disorders (LBD).

A candidate receives a Temporary Provisional Certificate and participates in the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP). The candidate must complete all degree requirements within three years and pass all required assessments prior to entering the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program.
